The Stone
Silver Obsidian Gemstone
A volcanic glass that cooled too quickly to form crystals, obsidian is the result of magma frozen mid-thought. The silver variety carries microscopic gas bubbles in parallel alignment — turn the stone in the light and a luminous silver sheen slides across the surface like moonlight on still water. Used by Aztec priests for divination mirrors and by Paleolithic toolmakers for blades sharper than steel, obsidian is as old a worked stone as humanity has.
